Event: NTUC Income Youth Theatresports Grand Finals

After attending the Youth Theatresports workshops held from May-June 2010, a team of 5 students were selected to compete in the NTUC Income Youth Theatresports Grand Finals on the 16^th July, held in our very own auditorium. Teams from Nan Chiau High School, Anderson Secondary School and Millennia Institute were there as well to try their luck at being crowned champion as well as have fun on stage. Theatresports trains creativity, spontaneity and the skill of improvisation and all the teams showcased their talent in these 3 areas as well as their acting skills in the games played that day. Audiences were asked to give suggestions for the scenes to be acted out and the teams had to improvise based on them. After a close fight, our team came in first. In a healthy show of sportsmanship, hugs and handshakes went around all teams and their members, proving once again that it’s not the winning that matters, but the experience. It proved to be an enjoyable night for everyone, from participants to judges and the audience.

On the 31st May 2010, members from the i-Theatre, Dunman High (Senior High) Chinese Society, organized and took part in a day camp involving 23 students from Dunman High School, 6 Chinese Society alumni members and 113 Primary 4 students from Pei Tong Primary School. The day camp was held at Pei Tong Primary School, with the theme being “Fun on the sea – Breaking through learning limits!” The camp aims to allow students to learn and use Chinese in a fun and lively environment through Theatresports.

The camp was held from 9 am to 4 pm, a total of 7 hours. In the morning, the participants of the camp were asked to “board” different “ships”, like the Flying Dutchmen, Apollo etc. After a brief introduction, the “ships” set off to different “islands”, exploring the vast sea. For example, on the Double-Soul Island, the souls of two young “sailors” merged into one body to form a “Double Figure”, which is one of the many Theatresports games. The person in front had to speak while the one at the back had to provide the “arms” of the person in front. Other Theatresports games are played on the other “islands”, namely Most Use of an Object, Little Voice, Emotional Replay and Furniture. There was also a mini competition held in the afternoon, where participants unleashed their potential and acted spontaneously upon given characters and setting by the audience. Although the camp was long and tiring for the participants, they maintained their high level of energy throughout the day. They learnt much about Chinese improvisation as well as knowledge on stage performance too.

After the event, many participants gave positive feedback about the camp. They also mentioned that they would want another similar camp to be held next year. As for the facilitators of the camp, although they felt that the participants’ high level of energy was sometimes too much for them to manage, they acknowledged that the participants were very enthusiastic about the games. They also commented that Chinese is actually not a difficult subject to learn. As long as we are willing to try, there is nothing to fear in regard to the subject.

Sir Stamford Raffles Theatresports Cup 2010!

Five of our Tsporters participated in the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) 2010 School Theatresports Tournament and emerged third in the finals conducted last night (30 Jan 2010)!

The competition was held at Small Hall, UWCSEA. Before the finals, a semi-finals was held at the same venue the night before (29 Jan). A couple of workshops were also conducted for the participants by Ms Irene Malone, the amazing improv teacher of UWCSEA, as well as one of the judges for the semi-finals Ms Alison Lester, another amazing improviser who now works with companies as diverse as CNBC Asia, McDonald's, IDC and Ikea to help develop communication skills and creativity. Our Tsporters learnt many new Theatresports games as well as improvisation techniques through the workshops. To name just a few, they learnt new games like Machine, Alphabet, Word-a-time Story, Furniture and Props, Thank You as well as Sonnet, Sermon and Song. They also learnt new exercises such as Yes and... and the "chicken game".

It was the first time our T-sporters performed Theatresports in English. They may have felt some apprehension at first but eventually, they shined on stage and performed really good shows for the audience. Teachers and supporters who watched the show were all really proud of their performance! Great job!

Last but not least, we will like to thank UWCSEA for their great hospitality. We will also like to thank them for organising this event. We look forward to Sir Stamford Raffles Theatresports Cup 2011!

National Theatresports @ DHS 2009 has been successfully staged!

The third National Theatresports @ DHS competition was successfully held by Dunman High School at Dunman High School Performing Arts Centre on 4 December 2009. Participants came from a total of 9 schools island-wide. Macau team, 忘不了。我爱 was invited as guest performers for the night.

Similar to previous years, a one-week workshop was conducted for all participants before the competition. In addition, we held an extra pre-competition workshop which lasted for a day for this batch of participants. The instructor of the workshop was Mr Jacky Li from Macau.

Last but not least, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all people who have helped us in one way or another. Besides, we would like to thank you our audience for giving us your support. We hope to see everyone next year again!

2008 National Theatresports @ DHS 2008

The second National Theatresports @ DHS competition was successfully held by Dunman High School at Lee Foundation Theatre (Nanyang Academy of the Fine Arts) on 12 December 2008. Participants came from a total of 8 schools island-wide. The champion team of Macau Theatresports Competition as well as Singapore home-grown team "Silly Princesses" were invited as guest performers for the night.

Similar to 2007, a one-week workshop was conducted for all participants before the competition. The instructor of the workshop was Mr Jacky Li from Macau.

2008 "Theatresports" Macau Open 2008 competition

2 teams comprising of 15 students from Chinese Society (Senior High) - i-Theatre and Chinese Society (Junior High) over to Macau in early September to participate in "Theatresports" Macau Open 2008 competition. This time round, apart from having the chance to interact with teams from Macau and Hong Kong, they also interacted with teams from Brunei and Taipei as well.

15 students and teachers from i-Theatre (one of Chinese Society (Senior High) groups newly formed in 2008) went to Pei Tong Primary School and conducted a memorable 2-day “Theatresports” Camp with the Primary 3 and 4 students in March 2008. A variety of games such as “Little Voice”, “Most use of an object” and “Die” were introduced to the students. These games allowed them to learn the techniques of improvisational acting in a fun and enjoyable manner and the students enjoyed them tremendously.

The grand finale of the camp was the friendly “Theatresports” competition. In the groups assigned, students competed in the games taught to them. The end of this competition also marked the end of the camp.

2007 National Theatresports @ DHS 2007

With Mr Jacky Li Chun Kit as the instructor, Dunman High School staged the first National TheatreSports™ competition in Singapore. A one-week workshop was held for secondary and junior college students before they competed with each other on 14 December 2007 on Drama Centre (NLB) stage. With these energetic youths pioneering TheatreSports formally at the Drama Centre (NLB), Singaporeans experienced for themselves the electrifying atmosphere of an improvisational theatre.

2007 "Theatresports" Macau Open 2007 competition

A team of 8 students (Group name: 哈比人) from Dunman High School went over to Macau from 25 August to 4 September to participate in "Theatresports" Macau Open 2007 competition. The students did the school proud by clinching the third prize in this competition! On top of having their hard work recognised, the students have forged invaluable friendships with the other teams from Macau and Hong Kong too. All in all, the students have benefited tremendously from the participation.
