Theatresports^TM

A form of improvisational theatre which uses the format of a competition for dramatic effect.

Created by Keith Johnstone, TheatreSports™ is a popular theatre form in America, Europe, Australia and Japan. Teams challenge each other to a TheatreSports™ performance game and perform scenes based on audience suggestions. In addition to being a test of participants' improvisation skills, TheatreSports™ puts to test participants' spontaneousness, creativity and team work skills.

NTUC Income Youth Theatresports Grand Finals!

Event: NTUC Income Youth Theatresports Grand Finals

Date: 16 July 2010

Venue: DHS Auditorium

After attending the Youth Theatresports workshops held from May-June 2010, a team of 5 students were selected to compete in the NTUC Income Youth Theatresports Grand Finals on the 16^th July, held in our very own auditorium. Teams from Nan Chiau High School, Anderson Secondary School and Millennia Institute were there as well to try their luck at being crowned champion as well as have fun on stage. Theatresports trains creativity, spontaneity and the skill of improvisation and all the teams showcased their talent in these 3 areas as well as their acting skills in the games played that day. Audiences were asked to give suggestions for the scenes to be acted out and the teams had to improvise based on them. After a close fight, our team came in first. In a healthy show of sportsmanship, hugs and handshakes went around all teams and their members, proving once again that it’s not the winning that matters, but the experience. It proved to be an enjoyable night for everyone, from participants to judges and the audience.

What is Theatresports^TM?

Theatresports^TM is a creative combination of improvisation theatre and sports competition originally developed by director Keith Johnstone in Calgary, Canada, in 1976.

During Theatresports^TM competition, teams of improvisers compete against each other for points on stage. To earn points, teams challenge each other to a Theatresports^TM performance game such as Hat Game, Three Words at a Time and Song, and perform scenes in accordance to the rules of the challenged game based on audience suggestions. In addition to being a test of participants' improvisation skills, Theatresports^TM puts to test participants' spontaneity, creativity and team work too. As the audience cheer for their preferred teams, the atmosphere in the theatre is transformed into one that is similar to a sports competition.

Theatresports^TM is a popular form in countries in America, Europe, Australia and Japan. Besides being embraced by the student population in the various countries, television shows modified from Theatresports^TM is not uncommon too, with Whose Line is it Anyway as one of the most prominent examples.

Theatresports ^TM @ Singapore

Mr Jacky Li Chun Kit's introduction of this form of theatre to the Macau audience in year 2001 marks the official entry of Theatresports^TM into the Chinese theatre scene. Since then, Jacky remains active in the promotion of Theatresports^TM in Chinese-speaking regions, including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

In 2007, with Jacky as the instructor, Dunman High School staged the first National Theatresports^TM competition in Singapore. A one-week workshop was held for secondary and junior college students before they were put on stage on the competition. With the energetic youths pioneering Theatresports^TM formally at the Drama Centre (NLB), the audience experienced for themselves the electrifying atmosphere of an improvisational theatre.
